Frederick
J. Berger (1916-2007)
Dr. Frederick J. Berger, an ASEE fellow and past national
director of the Tau Alpha Pi National Honor Society, died
September 1, 2007 at age 91. Services were held on September
4, 2007 in Queens, NY.
Dr. Berger was responsible for establishing the ASEE
Frederick J. Berger Award in 1990, which recognizes
programmatic and individual excellence in engineering
technology. He was an active member of ASEE since 1960.
Dr. Berger was acclaimed for his many noteworthy contributions
as an engineering technology educator. These include his
service for many years at City University of New York
as a professor, department chair, engineering science
coordinator, and the founder of (and faculty advisor to)
the Tau Alpha Pi and IEEE chapters of the institution.
As the first National Director of Tau Alpha Pi, Dr. Berger
built and directed it to national prominence as the professional
honor society for the engineering technologies. During
his tenure as Executive Director/Secretary, the Society
has grown to have active chapters in almost all institutions
with TAC/ABET accredited programs. He founded the Tau
Alpha Pi annual Journal and served as its editor.
Dr. Berger received the Letter of Recognition for Outstanding
Contribution to Education from President Reagan in 1987
and again in 1993 from President Clinton. He graduated
from City College of New York with a BS & BCC degree.
Dr. Berger was Chair and Engineering Science Coordinator
at the City College of New York from 1962-1982. He also
served as an evaluator for the Accreditation Board for
Engineering and Technology and a consultant to the National
Science Foundation.

THANK YOU From the faculty, staff, and students of the Virginia
Tech College of Engineering
Richard C. Benson, Dean of
Engineering
O. Hayden Griffin, Jr., Head, Department of Engineering
Education |
April
18th, 2007
To
Members, Colleagues and Friends,
The
American Society for Engineering Education is deeply saddened
by the shocking events at Virginia Polytechnic Institute
and State University. While mere words fail at this time
of tragedy and loss, we extend our deepest sympathy and
condolences to all at Virginia Tech. This terrible incident
touches all of us, and we, in the engineering education
community, feel immense sorrow at the loss of our fine colleagues
and their promising students. In the days of recovery and
healing to come, we will keep the faculty, students, and
families in our hearts. ASEE sends thoughts of compassion
to Dr. Richard C. Benson, Dean of Engineering, VA Tech,
and to VA Tech President, Dr. Charles W. Steger, as this
excellent institution of higher education struggles to respond
during this time of tragedy and grief.
Hokie
Spirit Memorial Fund
To remember and honor the victims of April 16, the university
has established the Hokie
Spirit Memorial Fund.
