Pittsburgh: A City of “Firsts”
Up through the mid-20th century, Pittsburgh was America’s premier industrial center, dominated by factories, mills, and ship-building yards that made the city a magnet for immigrant workers. Although traces of this rich history remain, today the smoke-stacks are gone, and the city is re-inventing itself as a clean, green and surprisingly beautiful destination. Set at the confluence of the Ohio, Monongahela, and Allegheny rivers, Pittsburgh boasts number of fine museums, sports stadiums, parks, and outdoor and water activities, making it a perfect setting for the 115th ASEE annual convention. It is easily reached from most locations on the East Coast by car, train, or bus, and by airplane from further distances. On arrival, visitors will be immediately impressed by the city’s remarkable bridges; there are more than in any other city in the world.
Airport and Transportation Information
ASEE will be providing complimentary, roundtrip shuttle service from certain hotels to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. For a complete listing of hotels on the shuttle route and hours of operation, please click here!
Pittsburgh International Airport is the main airport serving the city (16 miles distance, approximately 25 minutes). Taxis to downtown cost approximately $45, while the 28-X Airport Flyer Bus costs $2.60. The Amtrak train and Greyhound bus stations are both located downtown and are served by routes coming from throughout the United States and Canada.
Numerous bus lines serve the city, as does a limited light rail transportation system. Taxis can be found outside the hotels, but are not as easily available on the street as in other major U.S. cities. Visitors should expect to wait up to 20 minutes when calling for a taxi (Yellow Cab 412/321-8100, People's Cab 412-681-3131).
