Meetings
The Board of Directors of the ASEE Engineering Research Council met by teleconference generally on a monthly basis beginning in September 2008. We also met face to face on March 8, 2009 in Arlington, VA, and June 23, 2008 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The March 18, 2009 meeting of the board was held in conjunction with the ASEE ERC Workshop and Forum (March 8-10, 2009) in Arlington, VA, and the June 23 meeting was held in conjunction with the ASEE Annual Conference, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (June 22-26, 2008).
The ASEE Engineering Research Council held its annual business meeting on March 9, 2009 in Arlington, VA, in conjunction with the ASEE ERC Conference.
Activities
Current membership in the ASEE ERC involves about 260 colleges and universities with engineering and computing programs. A complete list of representatives can be found at: http://www.asee.org/member-resources/councils-and-chapters/engineering-research-council/erc-institutional-members
Attendance at the Annual Conference at the Washington National Sheraton Hotel involved about 200 participants. This Conference was chaired by Susan Powers with co-chair efforts / assistance from Michael Spencer and Michael Isaacson. In addition to the annual briefings by federal research funding agencies in plenary format, this conference tried a new venue with smaller group sessions for more direct dialogue with sponsor representatives. A noteworthy event was an afternoon session with an Energy focused panel session. A presentation at the annual ERC banquet was given by Robert Boege, Executive Director, the Alliance for Science & Technology Research in America Alternatives (ASTRA). The title of his presentation was: “10 Points for America’s Future: A Petition in Support of Science & Technology Research for President Barack Obama” . Sarah Rajala participated in the ERC Board meeting, the business meeting and the banquet. She provided updates on ASEE activities and introduced the evening speaker; her support and participation is much appreciated by the ERC and its membership. Information on the 2009 Conference may be found at: http://www.asee.org/about/events/conferences/erc/2009/index.cfm PowerPoint presentations are available to registrants by password access. (The password access requirement will be reviewed by the incoming ERC Board of Directors).
The ASEE ERC did not award the Curtis W. McGraw Research Award or the ERC Research Administrator Award due to an insufficient pool of nominees. Each engineering school or college is encouraged to submit a nomination for each of these awards annually. Information about these two ERC awards may be found at http://www.asee.org. The incoming ERC Board of Directors will be addressing the future of this award.
Research-related informational articles were not submitted to ASEE Prism magazine this year and there are on-going discussions about research-related articles to inform the membership. The new Communications Committee will be chaired by Greg Washington and initiatives will be discussed at the June 2009 ERC meeting.
The ERC will cosponsor, with the New Engineering Educators Division, a session at the 2009 ASEE Annual Meeting in Austin, TX titled: “Funding Sources for Engineering Research”.
The ERC has become engaged in the ASEE efforts regarding International activities.
The ERC Data Standardization Committee continues to work collaboratively with the EDC Data Collection Committee to assist ASEE in its efforts to acquire and distribute accurate and consistent research expenditure data.
The ERC has successfully completed it election cycle; all board positions have been filled and all rotations should be in accordance with the ERC Bylaws by the end of the 2010 elections.
