Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering seeks applications and nominations for the position of Provost and Dean of Faculty.
Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering in Needham, Massachusetts is an independent institution funded by a major gift from the F.W. Olin Foundation. The College graduated its first class in May 2006, and has a current enrollment of approximately 335 gifted undergraduate engineering students, who all attend on tuition merit scholarships. Located on a beautiful suburban campus of approximately 75 acres, adjacent to Babson College and close to Wellesley College, Olin College has a mission to prepare students to become “exemplary engineering innovators who recognize needs, design solutions, and engage in creative enterprises for the good of the world.” The College has a long-term aspiration to redefine engineering education to encompass the consideration of human and societal needs, the creative design of engineering systems, and the creation of value through entrepreneurial effort and philanthropy.
Olin College was founded with the key principles of continual improvement and innovation in every area of the College, as well as an unconventional academic structure, with renewable faculty contracts rather than tenure. The College is organized without traditional academic departments; instead, the faculty operates as a single multi-disciplinary group to enhance interdisciplinary cooperation and educational culture.
The College is dedicated to educating outstanding students to be well-grounded in science and technology, to understand the context which surrounds these fields, and to work with others to bring about positive change. At the center of this education is a curriculum emphasizing creativity and design; a broad education in science, mathematics, engineering, and the arts and humanities; and an understanding of organizations, business and entrepreneurship. The pedagogy heavily emphasizes inquiry-based learning and team-based projects, resulting in a community of active, engaged, self-directed learners.
Olin College currently has approximately 35 faculty, 10 academic visitors and instructors, and 85 staff members, and expects to recruit additional faculty and staff as resources become available. With an endowment of $363 million (as of April 30, 2010), the College has one of the highest endowments per student in the country--approximately $1.1 million per student--but also a mission that challenges the limits of its extraordinary resources.
The Provost and Dean of Faculty reports directly to the President and is a member of the President’s Cabinet. Olin College seeks an outstanding academic leader whose academic credentials and achievements, record of success, and personal qualities exemplify the College’s commitment to innovation in undergraduate engineering education and who will provide the inspiration, vision and leadership to help the College fulfill its aspirations.
Candidate review will begin mid-September 2010. Interested individuals should contact Lucy A. Leske, the Witt/Kieffer consultant assisting Olin College with this search, at OlinProvost@wittkieffer.com or at 2015 Spring Road, Suite 510, Oak Brook, IL 60523.
