The first year at a university can be difficult even for the most well-prepared students. This session will introduce participants to programs at UC Berkeley that seek to increase the success and retention of first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students in engineering. The presenters will share their expertise in designing and implementing first-year programs that have transformed the undergraduate experience of students from these populations. The PREP Program is a summer bridge program for incoming freshman in UC Berkeley's College of Engineering. The T-PREP program serves the unique needs of community college transfer students transferring into the College of Engineering. Aside from PREP and T-PREP, UC Berkeley also offers students comprehensive learning communities such as the Engineering Scholars as Engaged Scholars, which engages students at the intersection of environmental justice, social justice, and engineering.
