More and more Chinese universities have improved and are continuously improving their curriculums under the guidance of the accreditation of engineering programs, especially on strengthening engineering education cooperation with enterprises, from curriculum construction to internship training to competition organization, as well as joint graduation design or capstone design. The effectiveness of these work are increasingly recognized and accepted by both universities and students. However, there are still many problems in the actual school-enterprise cooperation. For example, the lack of teaching skills of enterprise experts leads to low enthusiasm for participating in university courses, many Chinese enterprises have not set up normalized intern positions due to the business competition and survival pressure, and the enterprise technical training resources are mostly different from the classic curriculum models of colleges and universities, etc. Therefore, many Chinese colleges and universities are still troubled by the lack of effective internship resources, the lack of opportunities to study new technologies directly from the industry, and the poor continuity of school-enterprise cooperation projects.
Based on the past 5-years’ experience on joint school-level summer school between Southeast University and Xilinx, the international FPGA technology leader, the first national FPGA summer school has been organized in Nanjing in July of 2018, which was led by Southeast University, Xilinx and ICisC, combined with a number of FPGA industry chain companies. Since ICisC is a government based industry service company, the committee made a university-enterprise-government union. The summer school lasts for 15 consecutive days. It is divided into two stages: technical training and project development. Xilinx provides the training content and training instructors. Southeast University provides event planning and part of project instructors. ICisC provides venue and event service staffs. And the cooperative enterprises provide training programs and rest project instructors. The summer school provides the participated students with latest industry technical training and real industry engineering projects, which can effectively expand their understanding of the industry and cultivate their practical and teamwork skills. Two examinations, two-round learning grouping, one final project report and several entrepreneurship lectures during this activity also effectively guaranteed the teaching effectiveness.
This first open summer school attracted nearly 200 students from all over the country to enroll and 120 students participated. In the end, a total of 96 students passed the assessment to obtain a summer school certificate. From the feedback of two questionnaires and the interviews of the students, most of the students are voluntarily participating in the event. The satisfaction rate of the tutors, venues and other organizational arrangements in this activity are all over 90%. It is generally believed that this activity is different with those the university students used to have in traditional courses or practical activities, and they gained a lot. Most students want more opportunities to participate in similar activities.
