The ASEE Committee on Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (CDEI) invites proposals for professional development programming, panel discussions, and other relevant community conversations (hereafter called Special Sessions) for the 2019 ASEE Annual Conference in Tampa Bay, Florida. CDEI will also consider nominations for outstanding Distinguished Lecturers. We invite submissions on any topic relevant to diversity, equity, and inclusion in engineering and related sectors across industry, government, and academia.
The ASEE Committee on Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion will not host a paper program at the 2019 Annual Conference. CDEI is partnering with the technical and affinity divisions to co-sponsor research and program implementation papers addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion topics. We encourage authors to consider the ASEE division most closely aligned with your research or program to publish and present your scholarship.

Submitted abstracts and papers can take many forms: theoretical to practical, conceptual to experiential, all with emphasis given to evidence-based papers and presentations. The division is particularly interested in papers that fall into one of two distinct categories: (1) Traditional Research Papers and (2) Engagement in Practice (Work-In-Progress) Papers. Since our goal is to create a diverse division program, we are exploring the use of special sessions that optimize audience interactions or bring in invited speakers, as well as sessions that allow hands-on experiences between conference attendees and the local community. The Educational Research and Methods Division (ERM) seeks paper, panel, and workshop proposals on topics related to ERM’s primary objectives: dissemination of knowledge on learning and teaching; dissemination of knowledge on diversity, equity, and inclusion in engineering education; encouragement of efforts to improve instruction through development of innovative materials and techniques, sound instructional design, and improved evaluation methodology; and enhancement of the status of teaching in the university and beyond.

The Engineering Design Graphics Division (EDGD) invites papers for the 2019 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition in Tampa, Florida in all areas of engineering design graphics education that involve the following topics:
• innovative teaching and learning strategies;
• course and curriculum assessment and improvement and ABET strategies;
• laboratory courses (including experiments) and hands-on projects;
• capstone design programs and design throughout the curriculum;
• integrating research and education;
• industry involvement in academia;
• outreach programs;
• inverted learning or “classroom flipping;”
• distance education; and
• other trends in engineering design graphics education.
The two types of submissions are: Work-in-Progress (WIP), and Research or Evidence-Based Practice.
All Papers will be “publish-to-present,” meaning:
• A favorable peer-review of a submitted abstract will lead to an invitation to submit a full paper. A favorable peer review of a submitted paper will lead to acceptance.
• Only accepted papers will be considered for inclusion in a Conference presentation.
• Presentation of the paper at the Conference is required for publication of the paper in the Conference proceedings. Formats for presentations are podium or poster sessions.
• All abstracts and papers must be submitted through ASEE’s Monolith System.
• Authors of Research or Evidence-Based Practice Papers will present in a traditional podium session with similarly themed papers.

Abstracts and Papers
Abstract must follow the ASEE Abstract Format guidelines submission (https://www.asee.org/conferences-and-events/conferences/annual-conference/2019/papers-management/for-authors/). The abstract should provide enough information to allow reviewers to determine its suitability for presentation in the EDGD Division.
The first sentence of your abstract is to clearly identify the type of paper that you are proposing. For example, “This work in progress describes the study of….” or “This research paper presents the study of…..”
1. Work-in-Progress (WIP): Studies that are at an early to intermediate stage for which authors are seeking feedback from the community. WIP abstracts should address the motivation and background of the work, methods, results (or anticipated results), and significance.
2. Research: New findings, situated in the context of prior findings and models, including motivation and background of the work, methods, results, and implications of the work and/or future directions for research.
3. Evidence-Based Practice: Analysis of one or more engineering education practices in a graphics context, including teaching approaches, uses of instructional technologies, institutional strategies to support student success, etc.), including design rationale, assessment methods, evidence of effectiveness and/or achievement of desired outcomes.
The criteria for abstracts listed above serve as the review criteria within each category. Literature citations should not be included in the abstract. Authors’ names or institutional names should not be included in the abstract, filename, or document properties. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that the requirements for blind review are met.
Authors of accepted abstracts will be required to submit a full paper manuscript that are to follow ASEE Paper Format guidelines (https://www.asee.org/conferences-and-events/conferences/annual-conference/2019/papers-management/for-authors/). Papers will be evaluated using criteria within each type as listed above, and the general criteria in the list below. Papers that fail to meet all of the criteria may still be considered acceptable based on potential to further the EDGD objectives.
General evaluation criteria for all paper types:
• The manuscript is complete. Authors should not expect to make substantial changes in a manuscript following its acceptance.
• The study is likely to interest a broad group of engineering design graphics education researchers and/or practitioners.
• The work builds upon relevant references and bodies of knowledge.
• The findings or ideas presented are generalizable or transferable to other settings.
• The manuscript is clear and coherent.
• The study is original and innovative.
• The study advances engineering design graphics education and/or practice.

Engineering Ethics Division Call for Papers
The Engineering Ethics Division invites abstracts for papers for the 2019 ASEE Annual Conference to be held in Tampa, FL this coming June 16-19.
Diverse topics related to research and education in engineering ethics are welcomed. We also encourage the submission of papers that address diversity, equity and inclusion in engineering ethics research, practice and pedagogy.
There are four type of submissions: Papers, Posters, Workshops/Special Sessions, and Distinguished Speakers/Panel Sessions.
We will be reviewing and accepting four types of papers this year:
a) Work in Progress (WIP) Paper: adequate for research studies at an intermediate stage for which authors are seeking to present early findings and receive feedback from the community.
b) Research Paper: Complete or near complete research studies that are situated within a body of previous scholarship and utilized accepted research methodology. Results, conclusions, and future research will be included in research papers.
c) Theory Paper: A review paper or theory-focused paper; must include a review of relevant prior work in engineering ethics research or education, and will present important insights or theory and/or future evaluation.
d) Evidence-Based Practice Paper: Instruction-focused paper about an educational project and its implications for engineering educators; must include presentation of pedagogical and/or ethical frameworks and relationship to prior work in ethics education. Relevant literature citations, methodology, and assessment results must be presented.
Posters are best for early stage projects or conceptual proposals that would benefit from more direct discussion and feedback from the ASEE audience, and can include work-in-progress research presentations and educational interventions that have not yet developed into research.
The Engineering Ethics Division also seeks proposals for ethics-related workshops or special sessions for the 2019 annual conference. Workshops are interactive presentations on an ethics-related topic of interest to engineering/engineering technology and teaching professionals. Workshops are normally presented on the Sunday immediately preceding the conference. Workshop presenters are required to cover the cost of the workshop and are therefore encouraged to supplement workshop fees with appropriate extramural grants and subsidies. (Please note that even after accepting a proposal, the program chair may cancel any workshop that becomes likely to incur a financial loss to the division). Special sessions can be either a group of four or five related papers on a topic of significance or a panel of several distinguished experts. Please contact the division’s Program Chair to discuss pre-conference workshops and/or special session proposals.
Distinguished Speakers/Panel Sessions
Distinguished Speaker/Panel sessions are also very welcome each year for the Ethics Division. These sessions have a separate timeline for proposals and acceptance. Please see the ASEE website for details. Please contact the Program Chair of the Division if you are seeking Ethics Division Sponsorship (sole or joint) before submitting your proposal to ASEE.
Abstracts for submissions should be approximately 300-500 words in length and include the following information: (1) the type of paper, (2) a clear statement of objective, (3) the relevance of the work to ethics, (4) analysis and/or assessment methods, (5) results or findings, and (6) next steps.
The ASEE annual conference has a publish-to-present policy. Only authors of accepted abstracts will be invited to prepare a full paper for peer review, publication in the conference proceedings, and presentation. To be accepted, abstracts (and follow-on papers, if invited) must demonstrate an appropriate level of scholarship.
All published papers are eligible for the division’s best paper award and best diversity paper award. The awards will be presented at the division’s business meeting, which will be held during the ASEE Annual Conference. The best paper from the division will then be considered for best paper award within the ASEE Professional Interest Council IV.
The Engineering Leadership Development Division (LEAD) of the ASEE seeks abstracts for papers, posters, panel sessions, and workshop proposals for the 2019 Annual Conference in Tampa, FL, June 16-19, 2019. The LEAD division is interested in advancing our shared understanding of practices and programs that prepare engineering students to become leaders in their chosen areas and realize their full potential in making positive contributions to society with their engineering education.
Examples of abstract submission topics for our division include:
• Successful educational practices that develop leadership competencies and motivations among engineers, especially those supported by evidence of effectiveness. We will also consider unsuccessful practices or experiments that have resulted in important lessons learned.
• Successful assessment practices that measure leader development among engineers, especially those supported by evidence.
• Research that advances the theory and practice of leadership development among engineers.
• Analyses of the problems or challenges of developing leadership in engineers within engineering schools, the broader university, engineering firms, or within specific stakeholders (ex., early career engineers, underrepresented groups, engineers disinterested in leadership, etc.).
Our submissions will be organized as follows and each abstract should explicitly target one of the following tracks:
1. Applied track – This abstract will describe a paper that addresses topics such as those noted above with a primary focus on application.
2. Research track – This abstract will describe a paper that addresses topics such as those noted above with a primary focus on the advancement of theory and research (ex., like a JEE article).
3. Work in progress track - This abstract will propose a presentation that addresses topics such as those noted above but are not yet fully developed and/or supported by data.
For all submissions, we welcome studies utilizing quantitative, qualitative, or mixed research methods. We seek high levels of relevance with our division’s interests and expect high standards of academic rigor, especially with papers that we eventually publish. We also encourage student papers and engagement.
Abstracts should be 300-500 words in length and will be peer-reviewed. The abstract should provide a clear statement of the work's objective and relevance to our division, its targeted track, a summary of research methods and theoretical context (where relevant), examples of results, future recommendations, and practical implications.

Submissions to the President’s Farewell Reception Poster session
Due to popular demand, we are happy to announce that the special Poster session during the President’s Farewell Reception will be continued!!!!!!! A separate solicitation for these Abstracts and Proposals will be forth coming for that session However be aware that non technical papers in this session will not be published. But technical papers submitted for the normal ID poster session will continue to be published as usual.
International Division Papers are being solicited for subjects in ALL engineering education areas that has an INTERNATIONAL dimension. That especially includes engineering educators from institutions abroad. An international dimension always adds new and different complexity to the normal challenging world of engineering education. The International division provides that venue to discuss and share these issues with other educators with similar international issues. Common areas are study abroad and travel trips. However our division includes cross cultural diversity, K to 12, first year engineering, ethics, collaborations, ABET and other accreditation as only some of the examples where the international component leads to stimulating discussion and exchanges during our sessions.
The following topics have been identified by International Division members as potential session topics and members are encouraged to submit papers for these sessions:
• Comparison and Assessment of Various Study Abroad Models in Achieving Global Competencies
• Integration of International Programs in the Engineering Curriculum (year long, semester, short-term / study abroad, co-op, and service learning)
• Starting Successful Faculty-Led Programs: Opportunities, Challenges and Risks.

Be advised that, as a contributor to the international division, it is expected that you and your co-author participate in the peer review process. The peer review process is essential to meeting the high publication standard required for Scopus and other registration systems and is part of your professional responsibility to the conference.
Please note, in order for a paper to be accepted for presentation in a technical or poster session and/or for publication in the proceedings, the Division requires submission of the full final version of the paper. “Work in Progress” papers are allowed. In addition, this division is interested in supporting sessions on special topics including panel discussions. Please contact the program chair to discuss and make arrangements.

NOTICE: The International Division is giving two awards: for best paper and for best STUDENT paper. We strongly encourage students to submit papers to this division. Abstracts will be reviewed as they are received, so it is strongly recommended that you submit your abstract early. This will also allow time to revise and resubmit your abstract if necessary. Liberal Education/Engineering & Society (LEES) Division Call for Papers
The Liberal Education/Engineering & Society (LEES) Division invites abstracts for papers and proposals for partial or full sessions, panel discussions, and innovative session formats for the ASEE Annual Conference, June 16-19, 2019, Tampa, Florida.
LEES provides a diverse and dynamic forum for those concerned with integrating the humanities, arts, and social sciences into engineering education and emphasizing the connectedness between the technical and non-technical dimensions of engineering learning and work. The division is dedicated to helping engineers develop professional skills in areas such as communication, teamwork, ethical and professional responsibility, and lifelong learning and to situating engineering within the larger social, historical, political, and cultural contexts that shape and are shaped by technological development. We welcome engineers as well as non-engineers and encourage researchers in STS (Science, Technology and Society/Science and Technology Studies) to contribute to the division.
LEES welcomes proposals related to any of the diverse areas that fall within the broad scope of our division as delineated above. We are particularly interested in facilitating conversations across divisions of ASEE in areas such as the following:
• “Professional Skills,” both ways of assessing them and differences in the ways they are understood and developed in different contexts
• Diversity and inclusion, in all forms (age, ethnicity, sexual identity, disability, disciplinary, socioeconomic, etc.), as practices and as subjects of research and critical understanding
• The human dimension of engineering, including social psychology, user studies, listening and negotiation, peer review, engineering cultures, and student motivation
• Mindfulness, empathy, care and reflection as components of engineering innovation, education and practice
• Social justice, social responsibility, and sustainability
• The role of technology in promoting and undermining democratic ideals and social cohesion
• Lifeview/Workview integration and careers in engineering
• Putting engineering education reform efforts, including accreditation and assessment processes, in social and historical perspective
• Global origins and impacts of engineering practice, education, labor and policy
All paper submissions are publish-to-present. Papers submitted to technical sessions are peer reviewed through the LEES Division process, and those accepted will appear in ASEE Proceedings. Paper submissions may include research reports, classroom applications, or other frameworks. We encourage review papers that synthesize and identify trends in research of interest to the division. Papers published through LEES in the conference proceedings are typically 10-15 pages Iong and include a substantial literature review. We also welcome proposals for partial or complete sessions, particularly those that involve authors from multiple institutions. If you are proposing a paper as part of a partial or complete session, please inform the Program Chair by email (contact information below) and provide the names of all authors intended to make up this partial or complete session. All paper abstracts, including those proposed as parts of such planned sessions, are considered for acceptance on an individual basis.
The first step in proposing a paper is to submit an abstract to the ASEE paper management system between Tuesday, Sept. 4 and Monday, October 15, 2018. Abstracts for papers should be 500-600 words long. We recommend that abstracts include at least a few references/sources that connect the material proposed to previous relevant work, including previous papers presented at ASEE conferences.

For each 2018 technical session we have also provided a brief summary and a list of possible topics for future papers and collaborations. We welcome submissions that address topics and questions other than those included on this website, but we hope the material posted there will be helpful both for those who are new to LEES and those seeking broader collaborations within LEES.

The Systems Engineering Division (SED) promotes education in systems thinking, systems engineering, and systems science at all levels of education, and for different delivery modes including distance education, hybrid and traditional classroom delivery. SED invites abstracts for papers and proposals for an array of sessions including technical sessions, tutorial/workshops, panel discussions, and distinguished speakers.
This year the SED is excited to offer: two new session formats/topics:
1) 5-Minute Work-In-Progress Session: This special format session gives authors of Work-in-Progress (WIP) papers the opportunity to pitch their work with a two-slide (back and front of a postcard) overview of their work in five minutes or less. After all pitches are made, attendees will have the opportunity to visit with and give feedback to the authors.
2) Joint Diversity session to include papers on diversity, equity, and inclusion in engineering, with the IE, SE, and EM divisions. SED encourages papers in these topics.
The SED is looking for submissions that address one or more aspects of systems engineering education, including but not limited to:
• New or innovative approaches and methods for teaching, developing, assessing, and certifying SE concepts and skills, and for bringing real-world SE to the classroom
• Curricular strategies, advancements, and lessons learned to foster SE integration
• Collaborative educational efforts and initiatives with industry or government partners
• Integration of systems-based approaches in traditional engineering or non-engineering curriculum and across various domains and P-12 (e.g. health, transportation, entertainment…)
• Implications of ABET EAC changes to teaching concepts, principles, and practices for all engineering programs
• Vision, roles and direction for SE education
All paper submissions are publish-to-present. Submission may include classroom applications, exploratory topics, research reports, and works in progress. Abstracts shall be 250-350 words in length. Paper submission is a two-step review process consisting of an abstract submission, review and potential acceptance, followed by a full manuscript submission, review and potential acceptance. At least one author for each paper is required to register for and present the paper at the conference. Submission guidelines and deadlines, along with other pertinent information, are available on the ASEE 2019 Annual Conference website.
All paper submissions will be considered for the SED Best Paper Award.

Abstract Submission for the 2019 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition (June 16-19, Tampa, Florida) is open as of September 4, 2018. The deadline for submitting abstracts is October 15, 2018 (23:59 EST).
The WOMEN IN ENGINEERING DIVISION (WIED) is seeking papers for the 2019 ASEE annual conference. Papers that focus on diversity, equity and inclusion on topics related to women in engineering, computing and/or technology are sought. Such work might include outreach and recruitment of K-12 students, innovative retention programs and their assessment. Topics that concern mentoring, recruitment, retention, leadership and professional development for women faculty and administrators (for example, work/life balance and dual-career issues) are appropriate. Other topics might include workplace climate, university programs, policies or reviews. Transformative research especially in the social sciences or cognitive sciences that informs the development of impactful and forward-thinking programs and policies also are sought. Popular sessions at recent conferences have included panels focused on improving the experience of marginalized students on engineering design teams, developing practical skills for men as advocates for gender equity, interactive theater to promote difficult dialogues about inequities in engineering education, managing dual careers, work/life integration issues, and academic leadership strategies. If you have ideas for panels and/or would be willing to help organize a panel, please contact the program chair. Panels that can be co-sponsored with other divisions are encouraged.
Authors should submit an abstract of 300 words or less on their paper topic. All ASEE divisions are publish to present. Authors of accepted abstracts must submit a full paper for review and acceptance in order to be included in the WIED program at the conference and in the conference proceedings. Panels must also submit an abstract and may submit a full paper.
