Advanced National Effective Teaching Institute (NETI-2)
National Effective Teaching Institute (NETI) - 1B
Making the Transition to Active Learning Workshop
Academic Engineering Leadership Workshop
ASEE is proud to present an exciting new opportunity for faculty members to learn about some important teaching methods more advanced than those covered in the basic National Effective Teaching Institute (NETI-1).
Advanced National Effective Teaching Institute (NETI-2)
October 7 - 8, 2012
Sheraton Seattle
Jefferson Room & Seneca Room (Located on the 4th Floor of the Union Tower)
1400 6th Avenue
Seattle, WA 98101
Description: NETI-2 is designed to add to the pedagogical expertise of engineering instructors who are knowledgeable about the subjects covered in NETI-1 (course planning, lecturing and active learning, and assessment of learning, among other topics). Two instructional approaches will provide the foundation for the workshop content: cooperative learning and inductive teaching and learning (inquiry-based and problem-based learning). Topics covered for each technique will include definitions, learning benefits and the research base that demonstrates them, implementation suggestions, problems that may arise in implementation and how to avoid them, and how the methods can be used to address ABET Outcomes 3a–3k and promote’ development of conceptual understanding and high-level thinking and problem-solving skills. Participants will be given opportunities throughout the workshop to plan applications of those techniques in a course they teach. Applications will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis, and will be closed at 50 enrollees.

Tampa, FL 33602
Description: NETI-1 has several goals. Most obviously, it is intended to give the participants information and some hands-on practice in the elements of effective teaching--course planning, lecturing, active learning, assessment of learning, and dealing with a variety of problems that commonly arise in the life of a faculty member. The workshop is also intended to provide new faculty with tips on getting their careers off to a good start and experienced faculty with instructional materials and methods that they can use in faculty development and new faculty mentoring programs on their own campuses.Engineering deans will be invited to nominate up to two faculty members from their campuses.
Please note:
Deans are invited to nominate up to two of faculty members for this workshop.

April 1, 2012, 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Mississippi State, MS
Description:
Extensive research demonstrates that actively engaging students in the learning process leads to a variety of educational benefits, including enhanced learning, improved student attitudes and motivation, and better retention of students in the academic program. In this workshop, attendees will be introduced to a broad range of active learning strategies, including simple active and collaborative learning, formal cooperative learning, inductive learning and problem-based learning. Participants will be familiarized with the research support for these pedagogical approaches, gain a working knowledge of each of these techniques, discuss when they make sense to consider adopting, learn to appreciate the strengths and challenges of each individual approach and experience how these techniques can be used in the context of an engineering course. Significant time will be provided for participants to identify specific active learning strategies that match the participants’ instructional objectives and individual teaching styles and backgrounds.
This meeting is co-located with ASEE's Southeastern Section 2012 Conference taking place April 1, 2012 - April 3, 2012.
