Conference Overview

Thanks to all those who joined us for the
5th Annual ASEE Global Colloquium on Engineering Education

“Engineering Education in the Americas and Beyond”

October 9 – 12, 2006
Le Meridien Hotel
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) presents an annual global colloquium that unites the diverse elements of the international engineering education world while focusing on issues of interest to the international engineering education community. The colloquium, held annually in locations such as Berlin, Beijing and Sydney with the assistance of engineering education organizations from the host country, links engineering educators across international borders and brings together teachers and researchers who would otherwise never have an opportunity to meet and exchange ideas and viewpoints.

This year, ASEE is pleased to be present the 2006 Global Colloquium in Rio de Janeiro with the assistance of ABENGE, the Brazilian Society for Engineering Education, and Rio universities Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and Instituto Militar de Engenharia. Program tracks will address the core issues of primary and secondary education, curriculum for the global engineer, and engineering for the Americas. The focus of the Colloquium is on successful strategies for dealing with each of these issues. Contributors will present examples of successful strategies, describing actions that are being taken and providing supporting evidence of what works and why. Beyond the excellent technical program presentations, attendees will have the opportunity to tour sites in Rio de Janeiro, along with the finest engineering colleges in Brazil.

We are pleased to announce that we have invited engineering students from throughout the world to join us during the Global Colloquium. A special student-focused program is currently being designed enabling students to interact with their global peers in addition to actively participating throughout the Colloquium. This will enable them to speak with representatives of corporations, international organizations such as the World Bank Institute and the Organization of American States (OAS), government representatives, university faculty and deans and engineering societies. There will also be several workshops focusing on cutting-edge issues related to Engineering Education and economic development.
