This is an honor that is awarded by the ABET Board of Directors to recognize exceptional contributions to the accreditation process. Dr. Kelly was recognized for "his contributions to the adoption of outcome-based criteria beginning with his service on the ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission's Criteria committee that wrote the draft for the Engineering Criteria 2000; for shepherding the criteria through the process of approval and for serving on ABET's National Advisory board for the Engineering Change: A study of the Impact of EC2000." NEW ASEE STUDENT CHAPTERDean Gregory N. Washington and faculty advisor Dr. Robert J. Gustafson announced a new student chapter has been formed at the Ohio State University . A constitution and working bylaws have been submitted to ASEE. Officers have been appointed for the new chapter. 2011 LAWRENCE AWARD-CALL FOR NOMINATIONSThe Department of energy invites nominations for the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Awards, which are among the oldest and most prestigious science and technology awards given by the U. S. Government. The Lawrence Awards honor U. S. scientists and engineers at mid-career for exceptional contributions in research and development supporting the Department of Energy and its mission to advance the national, economic and energy security of the Unites States. Nominations for the 2011 Lawrence Awards must be submitted by January 12, 2011. The Lawrence Awards webpage ( http://www.sc.doe.gov/lawrence describes the nomination guidelines and process. Questions should be directed to Lawrence.award@science.doe.gov or james.glownia@science.doe.gov CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION (CEE)Secondary school teachers in biology are invited to participate in CEE's National Lab Skills Initiative (NLSI). NLSI has three components: a clearinghouse of laboratory-based programming by state, teacher to teacher mentorship, and laboratory experiments used by exemplary teachers. CEE plans to roll out the National Lab Skills Initiatives in 8-11 states beginning with Virginia and Indiana before national replication. CEE is a 501 (C)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to nurture young scholars to careers of excellence and leadership in science, engineering, technology and mathematics. CEE annually sponsors the Research Science Institute (RSI) and the USA Biology Olympiad (USABO). COLLEGIATE AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING COMPETITIONArgonne National Laboratory is launching the next advanced vehicle technology competition in the fall of 2011 and is inviting collegiate engineering programs throughout North America to apply for one of 16 university slots that will be selected for the competition. EcoCar: plugging into the future is the latest three year advanced vehicle technology competition (AVTC) that builds upon the 22 - year history of DOE sponsored AVTCs. EcoCar2 will give engineering students the chance to design and build advanced vehicles that demonstrate leading-edge automotive technologies with the goal of minimizing the environmental impact of personal transportation and illustrating pathways to a sustainable transportation future. Accredited engineering programs at college and universities throughout North America are invited to compete for participation in EcoCar2 through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process. To receive an EcoCar2 RFP, interested schools must complete an online Notice of Interest Survey. The EcoCar2 RFP will be available in November 2010 and university proposals are due in January 2011.
