All Divisions are now Publish to Present
In order to raise the status of the ASEE conference and its proceedings,
the ASEE Board of Directors voted to upgrade the annual ASEE Conference
to "Publish to Present." In the distant past, conference papers
and presentations were not rigorously reviewed and therefore in academic
circles, efforts by faculty and staff to share their intellectual activity
through ASEE and other such conferences without reviews were discounted
as nearly worthless. Only journal articles counted.
The lack of rigorous review is no longer the case with ASEE. First an
abstract is reviewed as either acceptable or not accepted. The authors
of accepted abstracts are invited to submit a full paper draft. The draft
paper is reviewed, usually by at least three individuals. The draft paper
can be accepted as is, accepted with minor changes, accepted with major
changes, or rejected. When the final paper is submitted for a paper accepted
with major changes, an explanation must be sent to the Division Program
Chair explaining how the paper has met the reviewers’ comments on
necessary changes. The Division Chair will then decide to accept or reject
a paper.
As those who attend ASEE know, there is much to be gained by an author
presenting his/her research or program findings to a live audience of
interested and like-minded participants. Ideas can flow, be built on,
challenged, and created. Most of the papers presented at the ASEE Conference
already go through a rigorous review at the abstract, draft, and final
paper stage. The Board would like ASEE to be known as a prestigious conference,
with all papers and presentations reviewed, and for the conference paper
proceedings to have value similar to journal papers. If an author with
an accepted paper wishes to present with a poster rather than an oral
presentation in a technical session, they may do so. Therefore, the ASEE
Poster Sessions will still be held, but now with either authors of accepted
papers choosing to do a poster or accepted papers assigned as a poster
due to lack of room in the Division's technical sessions. Exceptions to
the "Publish to Present" include invited speakers and panels.
Divisions may designate one of their technical sessions as a "panel"
of speakers composed of poster presentations.
