Meetings
The Board of Directors of the ASEE Engineering Research Council met three times during 2000-2001: September 16 in Arlington, Virginia, February 25 in Arlington, Virginia, and June 25 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The February 25 meeting was held in conjunction with the ASEE ERC Annual Workshop and Forum (February 25-27) and the June 25 meeting was held in conjunction with the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition (June 24-27).
The entire ASEE Engineering Research Council conducted its annual meeting on February 26 in Arlington, Virginia, in conjunction with the ASEE ERC Annual Workshop and Forum.
Activities
During the past year, a special effort was made to increase the dues-paying membership of the ASEE ERC. As a result of this effort, the membership has grown dramatically and there are now nearly 180 university members. A complete list can be found at here.
Attendance at the Annual Workshop and Forum set a new record this past year with over 100 registrants at each event. The theme of this year's Forum was "New Directions in Engineering Research" with a special emphasis on new initiatives in nanotechnology. Slides for all of the presentations were posted to the web immediately following the meeting with access granted to all registrants. The goal for next year is to post the slides to the web in advance of the meeting.
For the second year in a row, the ASEE ERC awarded the Curtis W. McGraw Research Award. The award was presented at the ERC Annual Banquet on February 26. Next year, a second award will be initiated, the ERC Research Administration Award. Descriptions of these awards can be found at www.asee.org/member-resources/awards/full-list-of-awards/council-awards and the names of past Curtis W. McGraw award winners may be found at www.asee.org/member-resources/awards/full-list-of-awards/awards-archive/past-council-award-winners.
The ASEE ERC is responsible for submitting articles on research to ASEE Prism Magazine. This past year, articles authored by ERC members appeared in the September, October, December, January, March, and April issues.
Following the ASEE ERC Summit held in February 2000, two sub-committees were formed to follow up on the topics of Industry Partnerships and Graduate Student Retention, respectively. There will be follow-up at the next ASEE ERC Summit, scheduled for February 2002.
The ASEE ERC Data Standardization Committee submitted recommendations on research data collection to the ASEE Engineering Dean's Council Data Collection Committee. Many of these recommendations have been approved by the EDC Data Collection Committee and will be submitted to the general EDC for its approval.
At the 2001 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition, the ASEE ERC co-sponsored one sessions with the ASEE Board of Directors (NSF Proposal Writing Workshop), individually sponsored a session (NSF Center Programs for Engineers) and cosponsored a third session with the Corporate Members Council (Engineering Skills: What We'll Need in 2010).
