Meetings
The Board of Directors of the ASEE Engineering Research Council met three times during 2001-2002: September 29 via teleconference, February 24 in Arlington, VA, and June 17 in Montreal.
The February 24 meeting was held in conjunction with the ASEE ERC Summit, Workshop and Forum (February 24-26) and the June 17 meeting was held in conjunction with the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition (June 16-19).
The full ASEE Engineering Research Council conducted its annual meeting on February 25 in Arlington, Virginia, in conjunction with the ASEE ERC Summit, Workshop and Forum.
Activities
The ASEE ERC maintains a web site at www.asee.org/member-resources/councils-and-chapters/engineering-research-council.
During the past year, membership in the ASEE ERC increased by 10%, from 180 to 198 university members. A complete list can be found at: www.asee.org/member-resources/councils-and-chapters/engineering-research-council/erc-institutional-members.
Attendance at the Annual Workshop and Forum also increased and again set a new record at 116 registrants. The theme of this year’s Forum was “New Directions in Engineering Research: Research in Support of New National Defense and Security Strategies”. A highlight of the event was a presentation at the Forum Banquet by Dr. John H. Marburger III, Senior Science Advisor to the President. For the first time, slides for all of the presentations were posted to the web prior to the meeting with access granted to all registrants.
For the third year in a row, the ASEE ERC awarded the Curtis W. McGraw Research Award. The award was presented at the ERC Annual Banquet on February 25 to Dr. Jonathan A. Wickert of Carnegie Mellon University. A second award was initiated this year: the ERC Research Administration Award. This award was presented at the ERC Forum Reception on February 24 to Dr. Lester A. Gerhardt of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Descriptions of both awards can be found at www.asee.org/member-resources/awards/full-list-of-awards/council-awards.
The ASEE ERC is responsible for submitting articles on research to ASEE Prism Magazine. This past year, articles authored by ERC members appeared in the September, November, December, February, and March issues.
Following the 3rd biennial ASEE ERC Summit held in February 2000, sub-committees were formed to follow up on the two topics identified to be of most concern to the membership: Industry Partnerships and Graduate Student Retention. In February 2002, the 4th biennial ERC Summit was held and the focus was on the subject of Industry Partnerships. ERC plans to follow up on the subject of Graduate Student Retention by partnering with the Graduate Studies Division of ASEE to propose a Mini-Plenary on Graduate Student Recruitment and Retention to be held at the 2003 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition in Nashville.
The ASEE ERC Data Standardization Committee was reconstituted in 2002 in order to focus on (a) assisting ASEE in its efforts to collect accurate and consistent research expenditure data and (b) establishing standard questions to solicit data pertaining to internal expenditures on research. The chair of this committee will also to serve on the EDC Data Collection Committee. In a related activity, the current Chair of the ERC is serving on an ASME task force investigating trends in federal engineering research funding at universities. The Chair of that task force also happens to be an ERC board member.
At the 2002 ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition, the ASEE ERC sponsored two sessions: NSF Proposal Writing Workshop, and NIH Proposal Writing Workshop.
