Meetings
The Board of Directors of the ASEE Engineering Research Council met each month during 2002-2003: July 16, August 14, September 11, October 22, November 12, December 13, January 23, March 13, April 16, and May 7 via teleconference, and face to face February 23 in Arlington, VA, and June 23 in Nashville, Tennessee.
The February 23 meeting of the board was held in conjunction with the ASEE ERC Workshop and Forum (February 23-25) in Arlington, VA and the June 23 meeting was held in conjunction with the ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition in Nashville, TN (June 22-26).
The full ASEE Engineering Research Council held its annual business meeting on February 24 in Arlington, Virginia, in conjunction with the ASEE ERC Summit, Workshop and Forum there.
Activities
Current membership in the ASEE ERC involves 195 engineering schools and one engineering company. A complete list of representatives can be found at: www.asee.org/member-resources/councils-and-chapters/engineering-research-council/erc-institutional-members
Attendance at the Annual Workshop and Forum involved a record high 131 paid registrants (76 who registered for the workshop and forum and 55 who registered for the forum only). The theme of this year’s Workshop was “Managing and Working Effectively in a Research Center Structure”. The Forum theme was “New Directions in Engineering Research: Research in Support of Homeland and National Security”. A highlight of the event was a presentation at the Forum Banquet by Dr. Kathie Olsen, Associate Director for Science, Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President.
The ASEE ERC again awarded the Curtis W. McGraw Research Award to an outstanding early career researcher during the ERC Forum banquet in February. The award was presented at the Forum Banquet to Associate Professor Kristi S. Anseth of the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Colorado. Because an insufficient number of nominations were received for the ERC Research Admininistrator Award, this honor was not presented this year. Information about these two ERC awards may be found at http://www.asee.org/member-resources/awards/full-list-of-awards/council-awards.
The ERC is responsible for submitting articles on research to ASEE Prism Magazine for the TEACHING TOOLBOX section. This past year, articles authored by ERC members appeared in the September, October, December, January, February, March and April issues.
The ERC sponsored two workshops on Sunday, June 22, during the ASEE Annual Conference in Nashville, TN, one each related to NSF and NIH research proposal preparation. The ERC also co-sponsored with the Graduate Studies Division and Women in Engineering, Minorities in Engineering and New Engineering Educators, the distinguished lecture on U.S. Graduate Engineering Education by Joe Bordogna, Deputy Director of the NSF.
The ERC Data Standardization Committee continues to work collaboratively with the EDC Data Collection Committee to assist ASEE in its efforts to acquire and distribute accurate and consistent research expenditure data.
