The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) announces that Lisa Benson, Professor in the Department of Engineering & Science Education and the Department of Bioengineering at Clemson University, will be the new editor of the Journal of Engineering Education (JEE). Benson’s research interests lie at the intersection of student motivation and their learning experiences. Her projects focus on student perceptions, beliefs and attitudes towards becoming engineers and scientists, epistemic cognition, development of problem solving skills, and student-centered active learning. She has been an active ASEE member since 2005. JEE’s roots go as far back as 1893 and the World’s Engineering Congress, held in Chicago as part of the World’s Fair. Following that conference, the Society for the Promotion of Engineering Education was formed and its first conference proceedings were published in 1894; the society subsequently became ASEE. The annual conference and its proceedings served as the principal means of communication among the membership for the first several years of the society. In 1993 the current Journal of Engineering Education officially launched and was positioned as ASEE’s scholarly publication. “JEE has long been the intellectual standard for engineering educators seeking to disseminate their research. It is a voice for the engineering education community,” says Benson. “I believe that JEE has the power to strengthen connections between stakeholders within our community through inclusivity and a diversity of perspectives, and by advancing high quality and impactful research. I am honored to take on the role of editor, following in the footsteps of pioneers in engineering education like John Prados, Jack Lohmann, and Michael Loui.” Examples of papers published in 2016 include those titled, “Creativity as a factor in persistence and academic achievement,” “Engineering literacy and engagement in kindergarten classrooms,” and “Undergraduate students’ belief about engineering problem solving.” The journal is published quarterly by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
