General Fellow Information

Qualifications for ASEE Fellow are established by the ASEE bylaws.  The Grade of Fellow is one of professional distinction and is conferred by the Board of Directors upon an ASEE member with outstanding and extraordinary qualifications and experience in engineering or engineering technology education or allied field, who has made appropriate and important individual contributions to engineering or engineering technology education, as well as considerable individual contributions to ASEE.

The ASEE bylaws limit the number of members who can be advanced to Fellow Grade in any one year to a total equal to one-tenth of one percent of the ASEE individual membership. The Fellow Member Committee, which is appointed by the ASEE President, has responsibility for evaluating all nominations submitted and recommending a limited number of candidates to the Awards Policy Committee.  To assure equitable action on these nominations, strict adherence to prescribed procedures is essential.  These guidelines have been prepared to assist in the preparation of nominations in accordance with standard procedures.

The Fellow Member Committee depends on the nominator to furnish all the basic necessary information requested in the nomination packet.  References should be widely distributed with no more than two from any one institution or community.  A “Reference” cannot be a current member of the Board of Directors, or members of the Fellow Member Committee, Awards Policy Committee, Headquarters staff, or the Nominator.  Information on all of the application forms must be complete, specific and unambiguous because the Fellow Member Committee must determine the candidate's qualifications from the documentation submitted.

A nomination packet includes:

  1. An optional cover letter.
  2. Candidate's Educational Credentials.
  3. Citation - A brief statement, not to exceed 100 words, giving the major accomplishments for which the candidate is selected to receive Fellow members honors. This will be used if the candidate is selected as an ASEE Fellow.
  4. Candidate's Professional Record - Including only principle assignments; present position first.
  5. Candidate's ASEE related activities with explanations - committee memberships, offices held, awards, etc. Please include a detailed explanation of the work involved and time involved in each aspect of activity performed.
  6. Candidate's non-ASEE related professional activities - society memberships, offices held, awards, academic assignments, and government assignments, industrial assignments, advisory groups, etc.
  7. Candidate's publications - List the five most important publications. Include those dealing with education, if appropriate.
  8. Candidate's other professional achievements - Recognition for major contributions to the profession, such as books, patents, international service, visiting professorships, honorary degrees, advisory committees, consulting, continuing education, guidance and counseling, and similar activities.
  9. At least five letters of recommendation from ASEE members. Three of those letters must come from current ASEE Fellows. No more than two letters of support may come from individuals at the same institution. No current members of the Board of Directors, the Fellow Member Committee, the Awards Policy Committee, the Headquarters staff, or the nominator shall act as a reference. The nominator will be given the opportunity to search for and send a brief email message to those selected to supply letters of support. This email will also include instructions for the letter writer on how to upload their letter to the nomination packet.

Nominees approved by the Awards Policy Committee for Fellow Grade are announced at the ASEE Annual Meeting; at which time Fellow certificates and pins are presented in an appropriate ceremony.  Advance information on Fellow Grade selection is made available, as early as possible, to nominees who are selected and to their nominators.

Nominee Fellow Eligibility

The Grade of Fellow is conferred by the Board of Directors in recognition of outstanding contributions to engineering education or engineering technology education, as well as considerable individual contributions to ASEE.  (The Committee construes the scope of engineering education and engineering technology education to include the many and varied activities that make up the programs of ASEE.)

The candidate shall hold Active Member grade at the time of nomination and shall have been a member in any grade for a period of ten years or more preceding July 1 of the year of election. To confirm a potential nominee's join date go to the ASEE’s membership directory.

The Fellow Grade is an honor, which an individual cannot seek.  Rather, another ASEE Fellow or Active Member must initiate the nomination. A Nominee can only nominate one individual each year.
The Grade of Fellow cannot be conferred upon a current member of the ASEE Awards Policy Committee or ASEE Board Member.

Selection of Fellow References

Completed reference forms are required from at least five current members of ASEE, with at least three of these references being Fellows of ASEE. You may view a list of ASEE Fellows here.  No more than two letters of support may come from individuals at the same institution. No current members of the Board of Directors, the Fellow Member Committee, the Awards Policy Committee, the Headquarters staff (on the date of submission of the reference form), or the nominator shall act as a reference. Additional references may or may not be current members of ASEE. The completed Confidential Fellow Grade Reference Forms must be uploaded to the online nomination prior to the February 1 deadline. Although five references are required, a safety margin of at least two more is recommended so as not to jeopardize the nomination's completeness by the deadline date.

The selection of references is most important. To qualify as a reference, an individual should be personally acquainted with the candidate's work and be able to comment incisively. Glowing generalities carry little weight and are discouraged. Where exceptional contributions are cited, corresponding references should be selected to support each area of achievement.
