ASEE Appoints New CEO and COO

Washington, D.C. – February 15, 2023 

The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Board of Directors has appointed Dr. Jacqueline El-Sayed as Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The board has also elevated Patricia Greenawalt to the newly created role of Chief Operating Officer (COO).  

Dr. El-Sayed  - who has served as ASEE's acting CEO since October - joined ASEE headquarters in December 2019 as Chief Academic Officer. In this role, she founded ASEE Learning Services and revitalized and expanded ASEE's grant-funded research. She has broad engineering education leadership experience, having also served as the Chief Academic Officer & Vice President for Academic Affairs at Marygrove College. Dr. El-Sayed is a professor emerita of mechanical engineering and served on the faculty at Kettering University for 18 years. She has been an active ASEE member since 2004 and has served in both division and EDC leadership roles. She is the first woman to hold the position of ASEE Executive Director. 

Ms. Greenawalt - who has served as ASEE's acting COO since October - joined ASEE in 2005 as Conference Director and ascended through roles including Managing Director of Member Services, Chief Community Officer, and Acting Chief Operating Officer. Ms. Greenawalt has more than 30 years of experience in the association and convention management industry. At ASEE, she has helped to professionalize and expand conferences held throughout North America and the Caribbean.   

“Dr. El-Sayed and Ms. Greenawalt are both outstanding leaders for ASEE,” said ASEE President Jenna Carpenter, a Dean and Professor at Campbell University's School of Engineering. “Their dedication and selfless service to the organization have been invaluable, as well. The vision, innovation, transparency, and collaborative leadership of ASEE Headquarters Staff and volunteers which they have demonstrated will position ASEE for success as the leading organization advancing engineering education far into the 21st century. The board is most pleased to announce their appointments.”
